Our mood can change every day, from the good to the bad one. This is normal. However, when a bad mood lasts for 2 or more weeks, we need to be aware of the possibility of depression. Depression is a mental illness that can lead to some problems. It interferes with our daily life, even it can make us not to do what we should do and not interested in what used to be interesting. Before discussing medical depression symptoms, it is better to see what causes depression. There are at least four factors that lead to depression, i.e. genetic, brain, environment, and psychology.

  • Some cases of depression run in family, although there is no family history of this mental disorder. It is believed that there are multiple genes working together to lead to depression.
  • Depression also refers to brain disorder. It is shown by MRI scans that examine the brain of one with depression. It shows that there is a change of brain structure and function.
  • Some cases of depression start from being traumatic of certain life events. They can be either good or bad events, such as getting married or getting divorced.
  • One suffering from depression tends to get self-medicate to get rid of one of depression symptoms by having alcohol or drug abuse. This can lead to worse deep depression symptoms.

How Do You Know If You Have Depression

There are plenty of depression symptoms but they are categorized by mood, behavioral, physical and psychological approach. Some of them may be included in medical depression symptoms.

Mood Symptoms

  • Finding one of the following feelings, i.e. frustration, unhappiness, irritability, hopelessness, and sadness.

Behavioral Symptoms

  • Withdrawing from something or someone they love.
  • Being preferable to be alone.
  • Declining to have occupational or scholastic functioning.
  • Feeling not able to meet some responsibilities.
  • Unexplained crying or shouting.
  • Inability to concentrate and make decisions.
  • Having poor memory.
  • Being pessimistic.

Physical Symptoms

  • Having difficulty in sleeping. Sleeping or awakening in late of night.
  • Losing appetite or overeating leading to weight loss or overweight.
  • Losing interest in some activities, including sex.
  • Getting slower in speaking, thinking, moving and doing everything,
  • Losing energy.
  • Unexplained physical maladies.

Psychological Symptoms

  • Feeling restless and irritable.
  • Feeling worthless.
  • Fixating on past events, especially past failures.
  • Feeling empty.
  • Thinking of death or suicide.
  • Suicide attempts.

What If Depression Untreated

Finding those symptoms, one needs to immediately talk to healthcare professional. Then, they should be improved as soon as possible by doing certain treatment. However, some people prefer keeping what they feel for themselves without letting someone else take care of them. If so, there are some possible effects of untreated depression.

  • Being socially isolated
  • Having insomnia
  • Being engaged in alcohol or drug
  • Having some conflicts with family or friend
  • Losing job
  • Having some problems with the relationships
  • Self injury or suicide
